An Exchange in the Dusk
âUncle? What on earth are you...â asked the dumbfounded Riese. Overthrowing the king? That would mean killing her father.
âIs it so surprising? I thought youâd at least heard how I resent the royal family,â said Alfred.
âTrue, I did hear that,â said Riese. She had heard it on that day after being separated from Beatrice, at the same time she had heard that her father planned to kill her. In fact, she had first been told that Alfred resented the royal family, then about how her father had planned to kill her, after which they had been attacked by monsters. So invested had Alfred been in that conversation that he had let his guard down to an extent that would normally be unthinkable, leaving him open to attack and being bitten in two. The shock of this discovery had left Riese unable to do anything but stare at her uncleâs bloodsoaked body.
âBut I...â she started before trailing off.
âSorry, I didnât mean to dredge up bad memories. But look, thereâs no need to worry about me anymore, is there? Besides, I brought that whole episode on myself.â
âBut...â
âLetâs discuss that later. First, Iâm sure youâre wondering why Iâd propose such a thing.â
âWell...yes, of course I am,â Riese answered. Trying to overthrow the king was one thing. Whatever the motivation, she could at least understand that, even if she couldnât accept it. But for Alfred to invite her to join him was inexplicable. âWhy would I do that to my father? Iâve never held any hatred for him.â
âYou have good reason to do it. As I told you, if you do not, you will be killed. It is the only way to ensure your own survival.â
âI canât believe these words, even coming from you, uncle. Why would my father be trying to kill me?â
âHmm. I suppose you would feel that way. It is an outrageous claim, after all. Do you know what some people call you who possess innate Gifts?â
âIâm afraid I donât. Or perhaps I should say Iâve never heard of anyone having any particular name for us,â said Riese. In fact, she had barely heard anything about those who possessed innate Gifts. The mechanics of Gifts barely differed whether innate or bequeathedâcertainly not enough to warrant different names for those who had them from birth...or so Riese thought.
âThey call you âGodâs puppets,ââ Alfred stated.
âGodâs puppets?â It was hard to imagine that was a positive term, but she felt more confused than surprised. She couldnât understand why anyone would call them that. What would their reason be?
âI can see why you wouldnât understand,â said Alfred. âYouâve been this way since birth, so you wouldnât comprehend how youâre different.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âGifts are granted by God. That means they contain Godâs will. No objections yet?â
âOf course not. Thatâs common knowledge.â Gifts were not granted by God haphazardly. They necessarily reflected His will. But His will was not absoluteâmuch like revelation, it was a sign to proceed in a certain direction, but not an iron-clad decree.
